THE ROOM (Mnet New Direction Series)

When i got the call from my mentor and senior industry colleague at about 11pm on this faithful day, i thought it was one of those calls we will talk and he mentors me on issue that comes to mind , i was wrong he actually called to inform me of a job he want me to work on, this job he said will either put me on another level with one of the biggest spenders in the Nigeria Television industry or will make them not touch me with a 20ft pole but he was quick to acknowledge the fact that he feels i can do it so it is an opportunity to express my Talent.

This job has been done before but was rejected by this client and told the producer who is also a senior colleague to either refund or make it better ....re shoot, i forgot to tell you it is a 24Min's short film .

The short film was commissioned by Mnet under the series "NEW DIRECTION" it is titled "THE ROOM", new direction is one of the platforms Mnet created for upcoming directors to express them self and talent but it Will be produced by a capable hand and my mentors believes i am a capable hand .

It is always easy when you have a standard you are trying to surpass better still if you also have your own standards you cant afford to fall below , from what i gathered projects like this have always been shot on 35mm and 16mm but this particular was not and it left a bad taste in the mouth of people that watch it including me and this was my motivation to lead a revolution of young people that are willing to separate the boys from the men in the Nigeria Film and Television industry.

Obviously we don't have the same kind of budget the team who shot the rejected piece had but we have to deliver a better film than they did with almost half of what the budget they used this seems almost impossible.

I was bent on making a statement with this short film so i decided i was going to shoot film but it is impossible with the budget i was given then i remembered i could achieve that with the use of Adapters...Yes Lens Adapters and still have the flexibility of a 35mm or Super 16mm camera. My mentor was able to help me get the highest ranking Director of Photography (DOP) in Nigerian to help out with the shoot , you are wondering who the DOP is i will tell you later . The date was set, the director who is a young director has been contacted, the crew is in place and the cast started rehearsals almost immediately.

On the day we went for location recce it was really exciting and after that day all my fears disappeared because it was a good location far cry from the shoot that was rejected.

I had a very tight budget so i scheduled to run the whole production for 5 days and leaving 1 day as buffer but i was ready to drive 5 days .
Unfortunately we could not start shoot on the first day....well my pre-production was not as tight as i thought it was the DOP (Mr Tunde Kelani) TK had issues with some of the locations agreed and the schedule i had done previously from Movie Magic Scheduler , so he had to take me through a learning process of how i can actually re format the script so that when i import into EP scheduler which is an upgrade of movie magic scheduler (i am hoping to buy it soon) it made life very easy for us and i cant put value to my interaction with TK all i kept saying to my self is you have to suck (sorry i have to use that word)him dry of knowledge because i cant imagine, i have the honour of having a legend, TK teaching me stuff you most likely will never be taught in film school

we started the day very early the first scene was a river scene and it looked lovely the lens adapter called Redrock is very cool and gave us the look we had in mind, initially i was scared when we rented the Redrock but TK was so sure it will deliver what i described to him what i wanted for the film . And the Director Acho very young and energetic impressed me , all through the pre-production he handled was not very impressive.

All he shoot days we started earlier due to my new orientation of Studio based soapy and to my surprise all the crew and cast were up to the task and i was happy .

it all ended well although we wrap pretty late on the last day, at about 8pm with a night scene that was planned like that .
